Taupo

Taupo is only just over an hour from Rotorua. On the way are the fantastic Huka Falls.
This is part of the Waikato River.
|

|
From the main town, there are many places to visit within only an hour or so. There is the
Whakapapa ski area (of course, in mid summer this looks like a ghost town), also some superb
view points for the lake, such as this one. This is near the Tongariro National Park.

Lake Taupo is a completely enclosed lake as the top of a volcano, so the waves were caused by a stiff breeze.
Also - it is about the size of Singapore!
