Kaikoura
Marlborough Sound area, before Picton is really beautiful
Arrival at Picton port after just over 3 hours on the Inter-Island ferry. It is a very pretty
port too.
After picking up a different hire car from the port - it's about a 100 miles drive along
a superb coastal road - which can be closed if the weather is too bad. The stop at Kaikoura
was in a very quaint place called The Old Convent.

Kaikoura is well known for it's fur seal colony, and whale watching boat trips.
The seals at about 7pm are very lazy looking, and like sleeping on the seaweed - in any position
or so it seems.
They are particularly big things, but can't run too fast on land. This one was sleeping
behind some rocks on the grass and was disturbed by an unwary tourist (who jumped backwards
at a rate of knots when the seal woke !).

I don't think I'd like to argue with him when he's in this mood.
