Although about 310 miles to Franz Joseph from Kaikoura, the trip is incredible. The driving is
very easy, hardly anyone else around. The trip through Lewis Pass is spectacular, and pictures
can hardly do this area justice (like most of New Zealand in fact). Of course, make sure you fill
with petrol before setting off, there are very few petrol stations on route.

Glenfern Villas is a lovely base, just about 2 miles from Franz Joseph Village, and with
a stunning backdrop.

|
|
Try to do at least one helicopter trip over the glaciers. There are many to choose from,
even a basic scenic flight is superb, though one including a landing on the glacier is
probably one of the highlights. The glaciers (Franz Joseph and Fox) are truly stunning.
